First Medical Training Center opens in Tiraspol

Medical professionals from obstetrical and child health institutions will use lifelike mannequins-based simulations to enhance their practical skills. The first Medical Training Center at Tiraspol Mother and Child Center was opened thanks to financial support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)  offered in the framework of a project implemented by the UNDP.

Simulations in medicine employs virtual environment to reproduce realistic situations for doctors. With the help of mannequins, health workers will be trained in monitoring of baby during labor, delivery involving medical interference, to resuscitate newborns, stabilize infants for a safe transportation, and other situations. Trainings will aim to increase synergy of teamwork and drills in the algorithm of care delivery. A special emphasise will be put on prenatal psychological and emotional counselling of pregnant women.

“The center will offer numerous learning opportunities to the medical staff in Tiraspol and other localities on the left bank of Nistru river. The training courses, which will be conducted will enable health professionals to gain new knowledge, continuously improve their professional skills, ensure that the health services provided by them meet international standards,” mentioned Dafina Gercheva, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova.

“Together with our partners, we refurbished and provided equipment to the maternities on the left bank of Nistru in the past. Today, with the launch of the new Training Centre, we are making available a team of local trainers ready to coach professionals of the maternities from the left bank of the Nistru River,” underlined the Director of Swiss Cooperation Office, Caroline Tissot.

“Medical practice is constantly changing. So, doctors should continuously improve their professional skills. We aim to decrease the number of risk situations for mother and child,” notes Natalia Slepukha, Chief Doctor of the Mother and Child Center from Tiraspol. In 2017, in Transnistria were born 4,572 children.

The Training Center was opened thanks to the joint efforts of doctors from both banks of the Nistru River. Specialists from Tiraspol are trained by Victor Petrov, Head of the Chisinau Scientific Obstetrics Unit of the Mother and Child Institute. The Training Center will teach students too.

Transnistria has implemented regionalization of perinatal assistance, with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, United Nations and European Union. Starting with 2013, trainings on new medical standards were organized for medical workers, and five delivery units were refurbished and equipped: in Tiraspol, Bender, Ribnita, Slobozia and Grigoriopol. At present, Switzerland is one of the major development partners in Moldova, being the largest bilateral donor to country’s health sector.
