Two girls. Same age. Different opportunities.

Ana-Maria and Iuliana* are two adolescents who live in two different villages of Moldova. They are of the same age – 17 years old each, but the life of one is very different from the life of the other. Ana-Maria is a youth activist dreaming to pursue education; Iuliana is at home bringing up her one-year-old child, often abused by her partner.

I would like to share my thoughts on this and how UN Women Moldova’s team is approaching this in our work. We live in the reality of the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world and the need to achieve greater change in the development is highly urgent today.

Young people, especially the first voters, have become informed voters

More than 30,000 young people participated directly in the information and simulation activities of the electoral processes, organized by 7 non-governmental organizations during 2018. In Chisinau capital city, volunteers from the National Youth Center from Moldova were the ones who distributed information materials and discussed face to face with young people, covering also universities.

This year, the global United Nations UNiTE campaign to end violence against women and girls is highlighting our support for survivors and advocates under the theme ‘Orange the World: #HearMeToo’. With orange as the unifying colour of solidarity, the #HearMeToo hashtag is designed to send a clear message: violence against women and girls must end now, and we all have a role to play.
